Look, kid, everyone wants to believe they're "chosen". But if we all waited around for a prophecy to make us special, we'd die waiting. And that's why you need to choose yourself.

—Eda giving Luz an advice.

Eda: Alright, kid. Listen to me. I'm going away, and I don't know if I can bounce back this time. Watch over King. Remember to feed Hooty.
Luz: Please, no...!
Eda: And Luz, thank you for being in my life.

—Eda sacrificing herself to save Luz from Lilith.

We have the advantage, after all. We've got King the Titan and Luz the Human on our side. Legends in the making!

Edalyn "Eda" Clawthorne, also known as the Owl Lady, is one of the two deuteragonists (alongside King Clawthorne) of the 2020 Disney Channel animated series The Owl House.

She is a notorious witch outlaw from the Boiling Isles and the owner of the titular Owl House who is on the run from Emperor Belos and his subordinates.

She was cursed by her older sister, Lilith, to transform into the ancient Owl Beast via a scroll made by the Grand Huntsman, although she managed to harness this form and become a harpy. She is also the mentor of Luz Noceda, the lover of Raine Whispers, and the roommate and later adoptive mother of King.

She is voiced by Wendie Malick and Dee Bradley Baker in her curse form. She was also voiced by Abigail Zoe Lewis when she was a child, and Natalie Palamides as a teen.

Appearance[]

Eda is a tall, slender woman with ivory skin, elf ears, maroon lips, pale skin, and golden eyes (now her left eye being gray). Her untamed hair is thick, long, and layered with two tones of gray. She has a single golden fang that sticks out, orange claw-like nails, orange earrings, and an oval amber (now black) gem on her sternum. She wears a burgundy like dress with a maroon rips at the end, she wears a slightly dark tan or gray leggings with short high-heel boots that match her dress. She carries a staff with a owl on it with a mix of browns.

Biography[]

Past[]

In Eda's past, she and her sister Lilith were very close. She attended at Hexside Academy where among other things, she played in grudgby matches and was a rather rebellious student in general who played various pranks on her teachers and the school itself, much to Principal Bump's (and his predecessor Principal Faust's) exasperation.

When forced to attend IFWOT, facing expulsion if she failed to come back with a ribbon, she met Bard Student named Raine Whispers, who helped her with the challenges. The exam proctor, Terra Snapdragon, was unimpressed with the challenges of IFWOT and added one final challenge, a game of Covens and Wilds. Raine was assigned as a "Wild Witch" while Eda was a "Coven Witch", forcing the two to be on opposing teams. Raine lasted the longest of the Wild Witches, and when they got cornered, Eda betrayed her teammates, leaving the two friends to face off against each other. However, instead of attacking each other, Raine and Eda cooperated to launch an attack on Terra instead. Unexpectedly, Terra was amused by their behavior, but she still didn't give any ribbons to the students. However, she also promised to put in a good word for both Eda and Bump, allowing Eda to remain at Hexside and Bump to keep his job as vice principal. Once Raine transferred to Hexside, Eda would become very close to them, and the two became romantic partners at an undisclosed point.

Sometime later, both Eda and Lilith would try out for the Emperor's coven, but only one spot remained and they would have to battle each other. Eda, being more experienced, seemed to be more likely to get the final spot. In desperation, Lilith went to a market to try and take away Eda's powers for the day of the battle, but instead cursed her to turn into the Owl Beast, with the curse being permanent instead of temporary. This would cause Eda to earn the moniker "the Owl Lady'. Sometime later, Eda's curse would be reactivated when her father Dell tried to celebrate his departure with party poppers, resulting in the Owl Beast scarring his left eye and arm beyond repair. She would be given a gemstone to track the progress of the curse, but after hearing how her mother wanted to use extreme measures to remove the curse, Eda would run away from home, unearthing the portal door in the Clawthorne backyard while on the run. At some point Eda would meet Hooty and take up residence in the Owl House. She would also break up with Raine as they worried that their relationship was detrimental to her mental wellbeing.

While on the run from the Emperor's coven, Eda came across Uncharted Island and went inside the castle to shelter herself from the boiling rains. Inside, she found a recently-hatched King stacking rocks and mistook him for some kind of dog. However, she was attacked by Jean-Luc as Eda took the recently hatched King with her, though one of King's horns broke off. Sometime after Eda took King home with her, she saw King stacking rocks like he did in his castle, and commented how he looked like "a king amongst his subjects." King repeated the word "king", and Eda explains what the word meant. King would adopt the word as his name and believed that he was a despotic tyrant in the past. Eda never told King how she really found him and instead played along with his fantasies as the King of Demons to keep him happy. However, she did hold on to King's damaged horn fragment. Eda's mother Gwendolyn would also visit her every year, attempting to cure her curse each time to no avail. In the meantime, Eda would make a living selling random items from the human realm, as well as occasionally visiting it under the alias of "Marilyn", terrorising the townspeople of Gravesfield with her antics.

The Owl House[]

Meeting Luz[]

Eda first appears when she sees Luz, who had followed Owlbert through a portal to The Boiling Isles since he took a book she really liked, while selling her human oddities. She recruits Luz to help steal King's crown back from Warden Wrath's prison, the Conformatorium, in exchange for helping her get back home. The crown is nothing but a kid's meal toy from a fast food restaurant, but Eda wanted King to be happy. After returning home, Eda holds up her promise and agrees to send Luz home, but Luz chooses to stay as she doesn't fit in back home in the human realm and wanted to learn how to be a witch. Though humans can not perform magic (at the time), she agrees to take Luz as an apprentice.

First days with Luz[]

On Luz's second day on the Boiling Isles, Eda seems somewhat unenthusiastic about teaching her and tasks her with menial labour such as selling potions in the nearby town Bonesborough. This causes the former to feel dismayed, allowing Eda's business rival Adegast to trick Luz into going on a bogus quest in order to lure the Owl Lady and defeat her. Eda and King willingly follow, saving Luz and defeating Adegast. While Luz feels dismayed at lacking a special purpose in the Boiling Isles, Eda, taking her on a ride on her staff, encourages her to look at things from a positive view and forge her own path instead of waiting for somebody to tell her she's a "chosen one".

Later on when scavenging a trash slug corpse, Luz asks Eda to teach her magic in a different way, to which she remarks that while they do teach magic in those ways at magic schools, she dislikes those institutes as magic is supposed to be wild and unpredictable and teaching her that witches must always be resourceful. Still dissatisfied with Eda's methods and with hopes of joining magic school, Luz decides to take a walk back to the Owl House. King remarks that he'd be a better teacher to Luz, so Eda strikes a deal with him: if he can raise a baby trash slug to become his loyal minion and prove himself superior, Eda will be forced to move to the storage shed and wear a "shame hat". If not, King's name is changed to Mr. Wiggles. While King trains his trash slug via "positive reinforcement", Eda quickly realises Luz is missing and, under Hooty's direction, realises that she went to the nearby magic school: Hexside and is happily interacting with her new friends. Despairing, Eda admits defeat and King quickly relishes in his victory, but soon realises that he didn't train the trash slug properly and it attacks him. King calls off the bet and Eda decides to help him defeat it by pouring salt into its mouth, shrinking it. Suddenly, Luz runs in, apologising to Eda for her actions and claiming her teachings saved her life. Luz's friends Willow and Gus also arrive, saying that while Luz's actions have caused her to be banned from Hexside, she also helped Willow switch to the plant track. Luz tells them that Eda is a good enough teacher, to which she playfully tells the students to back off and teases them.

During a plight of Boiling Rain, Eda sets up a magical barrier to protect the Owl House and its inhabitants from the rain. While she sets up the spell, Luz asks Eda why she's called the Owl Lady, which Eda claims is thanks to her wisdom. As the barrier spell is rather exhausting, Eda goes off to nap but is persuaded to teach Luz magic when she bribes her with a sparkly pen. She explains that witches use magical bile to cast spells, which Luz can't do though she does mention another method ancient witches have. However, when she demonstrates a light spell that Luz records, Eda runs out of energy and falls unconscious, forcing King and Luz to haul her to bed. After King steals Eda's elixir, believing it would give Luz magic powers, Eda forgets to drink it and turns into the Owl Beast, knocking out Hooty, eating a Snaggleback sheltering from the rain alive and terrorising Luz and King. Fortunately, Luz discovers a light glyph on her recording of Eda's spell and, using King's knowledge of demons, knocks Eda out with a large glyph and reverts her back with some elixir. When Eda comes to, she gets mad at King stealing her elixir but calms down when she sees Luz mastering her first spell. Eda also confesses the curse is the true reason why she's called the Owl Lady. While Luz and King help Hooty up, Eda coughs up the still-living Snaggleback out and goes to sleep, attempting to confront her mystery curser in her dreams to no avail.

Trivia[]

  • Eda has a distaste to garlic.
  • Eda makes a cameo in Gravity Falls: Lost Legends in a wanted poster. The description of Grunkle Stan's ex-wife Marilyn also eerily matches a description of a younger Eda, which could mean that not only did Eda once marry Grunkle Stan, but that the universes of the Owl House and Gravity Falls and the same. By extension this means that Grunkle Ford is legally Eda's wife thanks to Stan impersonating him at that time.
    • Furthermore, Stan mentions that Marilyn disappeared through a door off a canyon after she stole his car, which might be referring to Eda using her portal door to disappear as she returned to the Isles.
    • It's also revealed that Eda has been to Las Vegas before and was disappointed by what she saw. As Stan also met Marilyn there, it's possible that this instance was when the two first met.
  • Eda apparently has been going out to the Human Realm ever since she got cursed as in "Eclipse Lake", she recalls watching a Dragonball-esque film 30 years ago when it first released, which coincides with the time that Gwen claims she's been trying to cure Eda's curse for.
