My leg!

—Fred's signature catchphrase

Fred[1], also known as Incidental 1,[2] Incidental 1A, a crowd member, Incidental 160F, Incidental 160J, and Incidental F1, is an incidental character who first appears in the episode "Reef Blower" while his production order debut is in "Squeaky Boots." He is classified as a hotdog-type incidental. He is also one of few side characters to have an episode made for them.

Appearance[]

He is a brown grouper with light tan fins. He wears brown pants with a black belt that has a yellow-gold colored belt buckle. In his older appearances the lines on his fins were colored black instead of their natural brown color. Incidental 1A has the same appearance as Fred's old colors variant. The model number "1A" was used as a temporary model number for him in "The Chaperone" while paired with Incidentals 1B and 1C.

Although Fred is an incidental, he has shown to have a consistent personality ever since his big appearance in "My Leg!" Before "My Leg!," his personality was often inconsistent and differed from other episodes. He appears to be a generally kind and somewhat normal person that is also usually prone to accidents that end up getting him injured, in most cases his legs get injured and he shouts out "My leg!" when this happens. He also does appear to have a small annoyance with SpongeBob but he still appears to consider him as a friend despite the number of times SpongeBob was responsible for getting him injured. He also enjoys being at the hospital so he can be near Nurse Daisy Bazooka, a nurse that he has a crush on. He also appears to often have an obsession with getting his legs injured or just his legs in general, such examples of this would be having a door knocker on his front door that is modeled after his leg.

Trivia[]

  • The "My leg!" gag is the most common running gag of the series.
  • Fred is known to have some well-known memes:
    • The "My leg!" running gag has arguably become Fred's most popular meme.
      • Aside from his famous "My leg!" meme, the scene from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie where Fred yells "My eyes!" from looking at King Neptune's bald head has also become a well-known meme.
      • Fred has also been known for "Rev up those fryers, because I sure am hungry for some," which then combos into Mr. Krabs tossing him out, making Fred shout "My leg!"
  • He can briefly be heard with a feminine voice in "Truth or Square" when SpongeBob steps on his head while getting through the long line at the Krusty Krab.
  • Fred is currently the character with the most voice actors, which is 12.
  • His tailfin is mentioned by him in "As Seen on TV" as well as shown on both Nautical Nonsense and Nautical Nonsense and Sponge Buddies, but is shown to be absent in "The String."
  • While he is a grouper, he is shown to be a mackerel in one scene during "My Leg!" where he appears as a live action fish getting sliced by a knife.
  • The main voice actors of the series, Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Rodger Bumpass, and Clancy Brown have all played Fred while also playing the main characters on top of him.
  • He has four alternate models: Incidentals 1B, 1C, and 1D and Ted (Bizarro Bottom).
    • Incidental 1D was originally considered to be an alternate color for Incidental 1 until he was later promoted to be a separate character with his own model number, being an alternate model of Incidental 1.
  • Troutenheimer's suit wearing variant was mistakenly labeled as Incidental F1 in the storyboard for "Krusty Katering."
  • He makes his first speaking role in "Boating School," although it is off-screen; he makes his first on-screen speaking role in "Home Sweet Pineapple."
  • Since he and Plankton share the same voice actor, Mr. Lawrence, he sounds similar to Plankton.
    • In fact, at the ending of "Tango Tangle," when Plankton is about to say "my legs," Fred interrupts him by also saying "my legs," and muffing Plankton before saying that it's his line, which breaks the fourth wall. In fact, the episode was written by Mr. Lawrence.
  • He is allergic to Cephalopod Spice.
  • He, Scooter, Lou, Harold (Inc 40), Judy, Old Man Jenkins (Inc 80), Old Man Walker, Old Man Jenkins (Inc 86), Mary, Steve, Mr. Mailman (Inc 154), Sandals, and Helen the Felon are the only regular incidentals who have consistently used names throughout the main franchise.
  • He and Fred are the only two regular incidental characters who have more than one regular incidental model number. They are also similar to his model numbers: 107 and 107A.
