Garry's Mod (commonly abbreviated as GMOD) is a 2006 sandbox physics game created by British developer, Garry Newman [1] and developed by his company, Facepunch Studios and published by Valve. Garry's Mod was originally a mod for Valve Corporation's Half-Life 2, but was later made into a standalone release in 2006 for Microsoft Windows published by Valve Corporation. Later updates saw an OS X Version, added in 2010, and a version for Linux in 2013. It is often used for machinima as one of the main tools to SMG4/Luke's bloopers included. SMG4 often uses the game engine to shake models around spastically for comedic effect. Originally Garry's Mod was used for characters such as Teletubbies or other things that aren't in Super Mario 64. Now SMG4 uses it for most of the characters. In more recent videos, they are mostly seen in their GMOD forms. This also applies to general models as well, for example, Peach's Castle was originally filmed in Super Mario 64, but SMG4 has since switched to a Peach's Castle GMOD map. This is especially noticeable when you look at the trees and the sky.

Starting from ♫ The Ultimate Smash Bros ♫, SMG4 began adding animation to GMOD after realizing that he could use what he learned in animation class in his videos. Wanting to challenge himself, he decided that Meggy Spletzer would be mostly animated, explaining why she was more expressive than all the other characters. This trait would be shared with Saiko Bichitaru, then Tari. In later videos, the animation for these characters would be used slightly less often, but the other characters would start being animated as well, albeit less often. Walking animations and other similar forms of movement would be reserved for playermodel or ragdoll movements, while other scenes, like talking, or grabbing something, would be animated.

False Nintendo DMCA Controversy[]

Around early February 2024, Nintendo addons were beginning to be taken down for unknown reasons, which later revealed an attack of DMCAs were being sent to every Nintendo addon possible, more noticeably anything Mario related.[1]

Since April 24, 2024, the person known as “Aaron Peters” impersonated as the employee of Nintendo of America to take down all of Nintendo models to Facepunch, which has been causing problems for not only SMG4's development, but in the entire GMOD community. Because of this, many efforts are made by the fandom to save the add-ons and stop "Aaron Peters".[2][3]

It's most likely that Glitch Productions backed up the Nintendo models as they are using it in the latest videos and they didn't make an official statement on the problem as of now.

Around early May 2024, the drip Mario outfits(archive) from the official Steam Workshop account of Glitch Productions got deleted, which marked the 1st time that the situation directly affected SMG4.

Despite the situation, thankfully, it can be confirmed that SMG4 is still continuing & not ending anytime soon.

On May 30 2024, Garry Newman, the creator of the game made a post(archive) explaining further thoughts on the situation, "confirming" that it is indeed Nintendo taking the addons down. It's not well-received by the SMG4/Gmod community due to Garry downplaying the situation and blaming the fans for their anger. As of June 25, 2024, fans have been trying desperately to reupload addons despite the news in the Garry's Mod announcements. Some addons are still standing prior to the incident.
