Comparison of Tom and the customer.

  • Being that Tom's design was inspired by the customer, he bears a strong resemblance to him, but they are separate character models with numerous differences:
    • The customer has a large triangular dorsal fin with lines on it, while Tom has a small fin with rounded spikes and no lines.
    • The customer has a protruding gut, and has belly button hair, while Tom does not.
    • The customer has long rounded feet while Tom has thin black feet.
    • The customer's eyes are directly on top of his head with no forehead, while Tom has a forehead.
    • The customer has permanent bags under his eyes, unlike Tom.
      • Episode 9 of Bikini Bottom Mysteries mistook the customer as an alternate variant of Tom.

An official figural bag clip of Tom's "When you see a repost" meme.

  • Tom has been known to have some well known memes.
    • His arguably most famous meme would be from the episode from "Chocolate with Nuts" where he constantly screams "CHOCOLATE!" and chases SpongeBob and Patrick throughout most of the episode. Many fans refer Tom as the "Chocolate guy" because of this meme.
    • The face Tom makes in the episode "Fools in April" whenever he hears SpongeBob giggling while he sips his drink has become another well known meme that is known as "When you see a repost." It is based on the idea of someone else reposting a meme in better quality than the original.
      • Aside from the "When you see a repost meme," a scene from the same episode where Tom freaks out about SpongeBob possibly doing something harmful to his drink has also became a well known meme known as "You WHAT?!"

  • On the official SpongeBob Twitter/Facebook/Instagram post from October 5, 2020, Tom's model number was mistakenly swapped with Incidental 3's model number.
  • He is one of the few characters who didn’t debut in their production order debut.

  • Original storyboard art of "Welcome to Binary Bottom" show that he was originally going to be advertising the soda commercial on the big screen in downtown Binary Bottom instead of Don. The way he is seen drinking the soda also looks very similar to the way he drank his drink with the one ice cube in it from "Fools in April."
