Synopsis[]
The TV stops working due to a power outage... what's in the basement?
Plot[]
On a dark and stormy night, Depresso is riding his bike towards the castle through the Showgrounds. He looks distressed and worried. However, before he reaches the entrance, he hits a small rock on the ground and falls off his bike. Suddenly, he is struck by lightning, which cooks him instantly and turns him into Billy/Meat Clown lunchmeat.
In the castle, eight members of the SMG4 crew (Mario, Luigi, SMG4, Bob, Meggy, Tari (and Clench albeit silently) and SMG3) are watching television on an omniscient TV set. However, lighting struck and electrocuted the power line of the castle, creating a power outage, and killing the lights. The gang was frightened, but Mario was relieved that the TV set was still working. However, a lightning cloud entered the castle and purposefully malfunctions the TV, showing a PuzzleVision testcard. Mario tried multiple times to fix it, even sacrificing Luigi, but the TV wouldn't turn on again, Mario tearfully states that he's having lots of fun when he doesn’t look like he is, before SMG4 corrects him that the TV is dead, this makes Mario go crazy. In a mission to find the electricity generator, and after a party of Monopoly: FedEx Edition to find out who will go, Meggy drags Tari into the basement, despite the latter's worries. Meanwhile, Bob schemes with SMG3 to catch "lighting-in-a-bottle" for Mario and the crew. SMG4, who stands alone, wants Mario to stay put, but impulsively disappears, making 4 disgruntled.
At the storage room, an assured Meggy and a tense Tari enter to find the generator. Meggy tried to open the entrance to the basement, but it was sealed. Tari thought it was locked, but Meggy noticed there was no lock and tried to unlock it, to no avail. Simultaneously, Tari's inanimate left hand, Clench, who was malfunctioning, woke up and Tari tried to hide him from Meggy. However, Clench insulted Meggy, and she thought it was Tari. Clench then broke free from Tari's grasp and surprised Meggy by insulting her. Triggered, Meggy turns to Tari, then Clench reveals himself to her.
Outside the castle, SMG3, holding a medium-sized jar, complains to Bob about his literal lightning-in-a-bottle idea. Bob tries to encourage him with wise words, and charms SMG3 into staying outside. In the castle, after a lot of searching, SMG4 discovers Mario sitting with a controller in the gaming room, staring at a blank screen. Mario confesses that no electricity makes him go crazy. Suddenly, white text about Mario‘s mental state appears on all surrounding walls, which SMG4 freaks out about. Mario then attempts to draw SMG4‘s neurons to make up for the lack of electricity, however, SMG4 hits him on the head just in time and escapes the room, while Mario crawls after him.
Tari, having explained about how she met Clench, calms Meggy. Meggy imagines what it were like if her foot became sentient. Clench however points out again that Meggy didn‘t manage to unlock the basement, and tries himself, by mostly copying Meggy‘s attempts. After a bit, all he managed was to make a flower grow on the entrance. Meggy smirks about his incapability and returns his statement, leading into an argument to Tari's disappointment.
Outside, SMG3 concludes that his time outside was wasted, and wants to go inside. Bob tries to convince him to stay with more sly questions and statements ending with a lesson to ''be the water''. In response, SMG3 comically turns into a water bottle.
SMG4 locks himself into the bathroom and, in fear, listens to Mario‘s punches. After a bit, he calms down, but then Mario unexpectedly smashes his head through the door. SMG4 cuts his head off, but Mario‘s decapitated head reveals that such an action is not enough to stop him. Even more scared, SMG4 runs out, while Mario‘s body reattaches his head to resume chasing SMG4.
Bob keeps on trying to keep SMG3 outside, but eventually, SMG3 has enough and smashes his jar, insults Bob and leaves. Suddenly a lightning bolt strikes Bob‘s bottle, and he quickly closes it. SMG3 stares astounding, but then quickly jumps Bob, and they start fighting for the bottle. But SMG4 runs out of the castle and warns the duo about Mario‘s insanity. Instead of running away too, they try to market the bottle with lightning to the crazy Mario, which would only cost him ''a year‘s salary“. Unimpressed, Mario starts chasing the two at a even faster speed.
Meanwhile, Meggy and Clench are seen competing in giant mechs about out who can open the hatch, which also doesn't work. Tired of fighting, Tari leaves the mech to inspect the hatch, then mysteriously opens it, which Tari reads that they were supposed to ''push'' the hatch, not ''pull'' to Meggy and Clench's chagrin. SMG4, SMG3, Bob and Mario then run into the room, but because of their speed, everyone is shoved at the same time into the basement. After regaining consciousness, Mario grabs the lightning bottle and cuddle it. Because it is so dark, SMG4 grabs Mario with the bottle and uses him as a flashlight, and looks for the generator. He glimpses the Mr. Puzzles's headless body, but thinks it‘s an illusion and continues. He finally arrives at the generator, and drops Mario and the bottle on it. The power goes back, and everybody celebrates. Suddenly, a white noise is heard, and everybody looks over to see the television from upstairs. Surprised and a little concerned, they walk closer to it, and the episode ends in a cliffhanger with a zoom-in on the TV showing the PuzzleVision testcard again.
Characters[]
Main characters[]
Minor characters[]
- Depresso
- Luigi
- Mr. Puzzles as TV box, decapitated body; not yet indentified
Deaths[]
- Depresso exploded after tripping on a rock & was turned into Meat Clown (aka Billy Roll) after being struck by lightning.
- Luigi was taken to hell by a demon after Mario sacrificed him in exchange for electricity (which didn't work).
Errors[]
- When Tari introduces Clench to Meggy, the first "C" is left lower cased.
- Clench’s nickname for Meggy being Cupcake also has the C lower cased.
- There's bit of a lag problem when SMG4, SMG3, and Bob enter the stomp/storage room. This may be due to moving multiple ragdolls at once. (9:37)
- The entrance to the basement is shown to open by pushing, contradicting SMG4: Mario Goes Coo-Coo Crazy.
- At 8:00, when SMG3 gives up on Bob‘s plan, lightning is misspelled as "lighting".
Voices Used[]
- Luke Lerdwichagul as SMG4
- James Bailey as SMG3
- Elsie Lovelock as Meggy
- Lottie Bourne as Tari
- Zachary Preciado as Clench
Running Gag(s)[]
- SMG3 screaming in a girl voice & trying to replace with a more manly one.
Trivia[]
- This is the first episode in the series since SMG4: Mario and the VILLAGE where Kevin Lerdwichagul does not receive a writing credit.
- This is the second episode after SMG4: Mario Opens a Can Of Beans where Aaron Rogers is credited as the lead editor.
- This Video was uploaded 1 hour earlier due to Daylight Savings Time.
- This video was uploaded 5 years after SMG4: Mario and the Anime Challenge and the start of The Anime Arc.
- This marks the first appearance of:
- Bob Bobowski since SMG4: The Day My Arm Went Psycho.
- Depresso since SMG4: TRASH FRIENDS.
- Mr. Puzzles since SMG4: War of the Fat Italians 2023 and in Season 14.
- Meggy references the name of a joke character based on her, Leggy, when thinking up names to name her leg if it became sentient.
- The ominous tone of the episode and the foreboding undertones related to Mysterious TV Guy might signify this episode begins a new major storyline and possibly a new arc. This is supported by the banner change.
- Clench's voice actor is now finally credited after two weeks of speculation, that being Zachary Preciado.
- Lizzie Freeman's archived voice clip of Meggy screaming is heard in this episode.
- If you look closely enough, the words "Space Invaders" can be found on the lower left-hand corner of the walls behind SMG4 among Mario's writing.
- After this episode released, the banner changed at 3:00PM EST (12:00PM PST; 2:00PM CST), including the supposed symbol of PuzzleVision with the exact name in the Limelight font behind to a B&W background based on designs of opening titles from 1920s-1940s cinema, where there are 5 cards (with the PuzzleVision test card) next to the PV logo at the center of the banner. This might be a hint that it could be a new arc and/or movie coming soon. Also supporting the hint of a new arc is a community post released the next day, showing the "please stand by" screen shown on the TV at the end of the episode.
- Fishy Boopkins, Saiko Bichitaru, and Melony are the only main members of the SMG4 Crew to not appear in this video at all.
- They probably might have a major role in the upcoming Puzzlevision episodes.
- Fishy Boopkins is confirmed to be having one as seen on YouTube's/Twitter's/Instagram's posts.
- Shroomy is seen in one of the posts as well.
- This is also the first and so far only video to not have cameos.
- In retrospect, Depresso's behavior implies that he was trying to warn the others about Mr. Puzzles.
References[]
- The Shining and The Simpsons: The episode's name and the scenes where SMG4 try to defend himself from a crazy Mario is a reference to the fifth Treehouse of Horror episode of the Simpsons (S6 E6), which in turn, the first segment "The Shinning" parodies on the 1980 psychological horror film The Shining.
- JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Meggy does the ORA ORA rush from Jotaro while the DORARARA rush from Josuke (Part 4) is shown.
- It also doubles as the Metal Gear Revengeance reference with "Standing there, i realize" meme.
- The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius: The footage of a blasting brain used from 5:44-5:47 is used in numerous episodes of this show before Jimmy says "Brain Blast!"
