"STOP IT. THIS IS NOT OKIE-DOKIE." SMG0 is a highly controversial character among the SMG4 fanbase. Reason: Divisive/controversial death immediately following his debut, leaving many fans upset that he's still blamed for Niles' actions by the gang, specifically regarding Axol's fate in the Genesis Arc. |

” | —SMG0 meets Niles again inside of Melony, trying to convince his corrupted partner to cease his madness, SMG4 Movie: REVELATIONS |
SuperMemeGuardian0, abbreviated as SMG0 or colloquially as Zero, was one of the three overarching protagonists (with SMG1 and SMG2) of the SMG4 series, the overarching protagonist of the Cosmology Lore and the posthumous overarching protagonist for the rest of the series.
Originating from another universe called Mage, SMG0 and his avatar, Fred, played together until the memes corrupted and attacked them. Left at the mercy of the corrupted memes, SMG0 and Fred were saved when the former's USB appeared out the sky and brought Zero out into the Great Beyond where he realized that the God Box had used it to summon the meme guardian in response to his desperation.
With the box's help, it creates a partner for SMG0 in the form of an artificial Super Meme Guardian named Niles, who helps SMG0 by creating the Internet Graveyard and Meme Life Cycle together with him. However, after the God Box corrupts Niles' mind with ideas of "perfection", he uses his new power to accidentally kill Fred and assimilate into SMG0 in order to become an interdimensional virus with the powers of a god named Eldritch SMG0. Trapped and unaware within his own mutated form, SMG0 remained a slave of Niles for many years until he was unknowingly separated from him by Melony during the events of WOTFI 2021 after she begrudingly kills Axol to stop "Zero" from destroying their universe, causing him to awaken inside of the incomplete universe with no memory of what happened or how much time had passed.
Six months later, his isolation is brought to an abrupt end when SMG4, SMG3 and Mario come crashing into his small world and he explains his past with Niles to them. Unfortunately, Niles immediately shows up afterwards in Melony's body and despite her resistance, is unable to stop him from joining back with SMG0 to resume his eldritch form and plans for the "perfect universe" once more. However, the fight between Niles and Melony causes SMG0 to wake up inside of Niles' mindscape and after being freed from his chains, ends up finding Niles controlling their fused form as he desperately tries to prevent Mario from escaping.
Despite his best attempts to talk Niles out of his madness, the latter refuses to give up on his goal of a "perfect universe", violently stating that the two of them are the true Super Meme Guardians and the power of the God Box is meant to belong to them alone. Seeing how corrupted his partner has become from the God Box, SMG0 throws himself in the way of him as he is about to drag Melony and the others down to their deaths as the God Box is being destroyed which snaps Niles back to his original self as he weeps over the futility of his actions. However, SMG0 assures Niles that just being together is enough and he convinces Niles to journey into the light with him to find Fred again, finally ending the cycle of death and madness brought on by the God Box.
Appearance[]
SMG0's true form has a very childlike and arguably the most simplistic appearance in the series, due to him being a stick figure with blue skin, one eye, and wearing a red bandana and baseball cap. On his cap is a symbol of a zero befitting of his status as a Super Meme Guardian, albeit with the slash leaning towards the left as opposed to Niles' zero eye which always is in reverse by leaning to the right. He overall bears an identical resemblance to Fred, but the only difference being his skin is blue instead of red and his number "0" on his cap instead of Fred with the first letter of his name.
Due to Niles' presence as a virus within him, SMG0's form mutates extremely due to the God Box's corruptive power. His skin turns purple and becomes more wrinkly with textures missing on small parts all over while his lower half is completely gone and instead his ribcage and spine are exposed along with his textureless insides as the spiked bones trail up his back. His mouth becomes filled with razor sharp fangs, his neck swells horribly into a crater-shape and spikes pertruding out on all sides while a giant, ring-shaped horn is stuck inside of his head and his shoulders become more exposed as well. Most notably is the giant red eye with a white reversed "0" iris that indicates that Niles is the one in complete control of this mutated form.
Personality[]
SMG0 is as innocent as he is kind-hearted, loving nothing more than playing with his avatar Fred and partner guardian Niles, before the latter began his conquest for the "perfect universe" after being corrupted by the God Box. He is very cheery and always helping those who need it, even if he doesn't know them, showing great generosity and goodwill; such as when he took the unconscious Mario, SMG3 and SMG4 to his home inside of the God Box after their ship crashed in front of him despite the fact that it almost landed on him.
He is also courageous as when he awoken inside of Eldritch SMG0, despite his worry and confusion, he was willing to give his life to allow Mario, Melony, SMG3 and SMG4 to escape the God Box alive as he believed they didn't deserve to be dragged down with his and Niles' failure and threw himself in the way of Niles to prevent Eldritch SMG0 from killing them, even though he knew it would mean his and Niles' demise. However, despite all that Niles had done, SMG0 was willing to forgive his evil half and assure him that being together was enough and encouraged him to find Fred with him again in the next life, proving he has great empathy and strength of heart for being able to forgive even Niles' horrible atrocities which caused the rest of the SMGs, along with their friends, to despise him and instead wished to help his partner find peace again.
Despite being unconscious when Niles is controlling him, a small part of SMG0 is able to manifest for a short while through Eldritch SMG0, such as when he weeped "HELP..." after Niles had murdered Spudnick in front of SMG1 and SMG2, showing horror at what his counterpart was doing while he was helpless to do anything but watch and when Niles was about to kill Melony and the others as the God Box was in the process of self-destructing, SMG0 got in the way, forcing Eldritch SMG0 to stand down and allow them to escape and helping Niles to heal his sorrows, bringing some semblance of peace to Eldritch SMG0 in its final moments.
Powers[]
The full extent of SMG0's true power is unknown due to how little was shown of him in his true form before being assimilated by Niles and sacrificing himself to stop him. Given that he is a Super Meme Guardian, it can be assumed that SMG0 has the same basic powers as SMG1, SMG2, SMG3 and SMG4 and thus would be on the same level (A-Tier) as them. Aside from his status as an SMG, he also has seemingly magical powers inherent to his game, Mage, that he shares with his avatar, such as being able to shoot fireballs and summon shields to block them.
True form[]
- Wizard-like powers: Based on their game, SMG0 is capable of shooting fireballs and summoning magical shields, as shown while playing with Fred.
- Meme transmutation: Being the original Super Meme Guardian, SMG0 is assumed to have the same powers as the other four but since he wasn't meant to have a partner, its assumed that he is different from the others as he can use his meme powers by himself. However, it's unknown if his powers are weaker than the other SMGs since they combined their strength to use their meme powers.
- Independent form: Unlike the four SMGs after him who were transported into their universes as modded recolors of their avatars, SMG0 was always a part of the Mage program as the CPU player who was a blue variant to Fred's red color. Thus, his form isn't compromised even if Fred dies, as he appears exactly the same many years after Mage was destroyed by Niles.
- Expert cooking skills: SMG0 is shown to be very proficient in the art of baking, specifically with sweets such as cake and tea, which he was able to prepare for SMG3, SMG4 and Mario after he brought them to his treehouse inside of his universal remnant, despite there being a presumed finite amount of materials to use as ingredients inside of his small pocket universe and considering that he lives there alone.
Eldritch SMG0 (Form controlled by Niles)[]
Despite being the physical host for Eldritch SMG0, the real SMG0 has no control over his merged form with Niles and is unconscious the entire time. Instead, his powers are combined with Niles and the God Box's power to grant his mutated form the powers of a god that Niles has full control over. In this form, Niles is one of the strongest characters in the series, surpassed only by the God Box and rivaled by Fierce Deity Melony. Despite this, he is still much more powerful than Waluigi, Francis and SMG3 who all gained superpowers. His corruptive power can bypass an avatar's invulnerability and destroy entire universes.
Weakness[]
True form[]
- Meme Dependency: Despite having never been shown to use his meme powers, as a Super Meme Guardian, SMG0 requires memes in order to use his superpowers. However, it's unknown if he has to hold hands with Niles to use these powers or if he is capable of transmuting memes of his own power.
Eldritch SMG0 (Form controlled by Niles)[]
- Host dependence: If Niles chooses to assimilate into another creature while assimilating SMG0, he risks losing his grip on Zero if the host is killed, as Melony killing Axol forced Niles and SMG0 back into their true forms.
- Power of another God: Due to Eldritch SMG0 being a god, the only thing that can harm him is another creature of similar godliness, such as Melony in her Fierce Deity form, being the only one capable of genuinely harming Niles even in his eldritch form and it being powerful enough to awaken the real SMG0 inside of the mindscape, allowing him to break free and intervene in Niles' control over their merged form.
Trivia[]
Lore Trivia[]
- It was originally believed that when Eldritch SMG0 was thought to be the real SMG0, his intentions were to kill every avatar he found to destroy all universes but in fact, its the opposite; Niles (as Eldritch SMG0) wants an avatar of his own and after Fred was accidentally killed by his own hand, he attempted to find another to recreate his universe for himself and SMG0. After failing to convert Spudnick, Niles turned his attention onto Mario and nearly succeeded in corrupting him.
- After Niles killed Spudnick, SMG0 pleas out "HELP..." to SMG1 and SMG2, foreshadowing that the real SMG0 was a prisoner within Eldritch SMG0 and was able to take control momentarily to cry out for help before Niles took back control of their merged form.
- For the first half of the Genesis Arc, Niles (as Eldritch SMG0) was referred to as Zero, with his true name being hinted at until it was confirmed in the second half that he was, in fact, originally a Super Meme Guardian:
- SMG1 and SMG2 calling SMG4 and SMG3 "Four" and "Three" while they refer to Eldritch SMG0 as "Zero", due to believing him to be the real SMG0.
- Just like SMG1, SMG2, SMG3, and SMG4, Eldritch SMG0 arrived in SMG1 and SMG2's universe in a Guardian Pod.
- In the second Meggy stream, after she watched the 10 Year Anniversary Special, Meggy theorized that Zero's real name was actually SMG0 and that he got corrupted by some kind of power.
- In SMG4: SMG4 Goes Insane, an insane SMG4 was about to tell Mario his theory that Zero might actually be SMG0, but was knocked out before he could finish his sentence.
- In SMG4: The Other Universe, Mario was the first to directly refer to Zero as "SMG0", confirming his status as a Super Meme Guardian.
In comparison with other villains[]
- Eldritch SMG0 was falsely believed to be the third character whose goal involved killing Mario, with the first and second are Enzo and Villager. However, this was proven as a misconception later on in SMG4: The Final Piece, as his plans actually involved corrupting Mario while keeping him alive (also against his will as Niles was actually controlling him).
- Eldritch SMG0 is the first arc villain to be an original character with an original model, which also makes Eldritch SMG0 (aka Niles) the first arc villain not to be related to Nintendo in anyway.
Possible Inspirations/Similarities[]
- Eldritch SMG0 has some similarities to Zero from the Kirby franchise's Dark Matter Trilogy:
- Both share the same name.
- Both can take on the form of an eye.
- Both can possess others, warping their bodies while doing do, with special emphasis on unnatural eyes and teeth (King Dedede, Axol).
- Eldritch SMG0 also has some similarities to Majora from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask:
- Both attempted to commit omnicide.
- Both have took on different forms.
- Both possessed/corrupted another character (the Skull Kid for Majora, Axol for Eldritch SMG0) ultimately making them a major antagonist.
- Both of them was killed off by a major character (Link for Majora, Melony for Eldritch SMG0).
- Both of them were responsible in some way for most of the events of the game/series they've appeared in.
- Both had various cameos even after they were killed off.
- Eldritch SMG0 may have also been inspired by Agent Smith from The Matrix franchise, Invictus from Final Space, Starro from Batman, X.A.N.A. from Code Lyoko, and Null from Minecraft.
- All six are viruses who aim to exterminate all life for one reason or another.
- All six are capable of possessing other living creatures.
- All six don’t seem to possess any redeeming qualities, and if they did, they essentially completely lost them in the end.
- Most importantly, all six seek to destroy and/or use a certain individual in order to achieve their goals (Spudnick and Mario for Eldritch SMG0, Aelita for X.A.N.A., Neo for Agent Smith, Gary Goodspeed for Invictus, B'wana Beast for Starro, and Herobrine for Null.
- Eldritch SMG0 may have also been inspired by the kaiju Grimdo from Ultraman Taiga The Movie: New Generation Climax:
- Both have only one eye.
- Both can take the form of a giant floating eye.
- Both have bizarre shaped head crests.
- Both are immensely large in hight.
- Both have deformed torsos.
- Both also have other deformed sections on their bodies that seem to have rows of sharp teeth.
- Eldritch SMG0 might've been inspired by Solaris from Sonic, as both are considered gods hellbent on destroying the universe for different reasons. Not to mention, both are a fused combination of two entities (SMG0 and Niles, Iblis and Mephiles the Dark).
- Eldritch SMG0 and his corrupted Guardian Pod might be inspired by the Cosmic Gigalith and The Devourer from the Epic Battle Fantasy series by Matt Roszak. Possible evidence includes:
- All physically appear during the fifth episode/arc of their respective series (SMG0's Guardian Pod physically debuted in the Genesis Arc of SMG4, The Devourer and Cosmic Gigalith physically debuted in Epic Battle Fantasy 5).
- All appeared during the time of the main characters rediscovering their past (SMG0 - SMG4 searching for answers about his history in the Genesis Arc, The Devourer - the playable cast forgetting about their adventures due to a reboot of their universe).
- Both Niles and The Devourer are aware of the existence of "avatars" and "guardians".
- His behavior is similar to Giygas from Earthbound, who was not afraid of destroying the universe.
- Niles' goal for a quiet and peaceful life with SMG0 and their new avatar, even if it means everyone else's doom, could be a reference to Yoshikage Kira, the main antagonist of Diamond is Unbreakable and Enrico Pucci, the main antagonist of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
- Coincidentally, Eldritch SMG0 draining the life out of Multi-colored Marios using his long arm is similar to Cursa from Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope (announced June 12, 2021) draining the life out Sparks (Luma/Rabbid hybrids) using its long arm.
- Eldritch SMG0 could be comparable to Majin Buu from the Dragon Ball series.
- Eldritch SMG0 and Majin Buu have both good (SMG0/Good Buu) and evil (Niles/Kid Buu) sides.
- The evil halves forcefully combined with their good half into a powerful, monstrous form but with the evil in total control.
- They both split apart into the good and evil halves after being defeated.
Additional Trivia[]
- Eldritch SMG0's true form is the biggest model Luke & Kevin have ever created.
- Throughout the course of the Genesis Arc, Eldritch SMG0 took many forms, but it was his disembodied hand that he had made the least use of in this arc.
- Luke and James ranked Eldritch SMG0 as the top "S-Tier character" in the "SMG4 Power levels tier list" during the 5,100,000 Subscribers Livestream.
- In a Deltarune Twitch Stream, James Bailey confirmed that "Zero is not done yet", hinting that he was still alive and that he would return in a future story arc.
- This is proven true in SMG4 Movie: REVELATIONS, where he actually returned as the real SMG0.
- If Niles were to succeed in making Mario his avatar, as SMGs take the appearance of their avatar, this means that SMG0 and Niles would have become Mario Recolors. This is backed up by one of Niles' lines in the War of the Fat Italians 2021 rap, where he talks about his "fresh, new form.
- During the Jimmy Neutron segment of SMG4: If Mario Was In... Nickelodeon, Eldritch SMG0 makes a cameo as a crewmate in Among Us form replacing one of the "0"s.
- Unlike the other Super Meme Guardians, SMG0 did not lose any of his textures after Fred's death. It's implied that SMG0 wasn’t a recolored Fred created by modding unlike the others being recolored versions of Spudnick and Mario. Instead, SMG0 is the second player that existed in the Mage game that was used in Multiplayer and Luke gave him a nickname: SMG0.
- It is unknown if SMG0 is actually the prototype of the SMGs, due to the fact that the Guardian Pods didn't exist back then, and Zero existed as the second player in Mage,
- SMG0 is the eleventh character who’s death was taken seriously, after Clone Mario, Desti, Francis, Greg The Alien, Spudnick, Auri Bori, Axol, Box Club Leader, Fred and Terrance.
- He is the first Super Meme Guardian to have truly perished, but unlike Niles, was accepting of his fate.
- A YouTuber by the name of Koopa Impending is currently working on a Friday Night Funkin Mod of Eldritch SMG0.
- SMG0's personality and tone very closely resemble that of Serial Designation N from Murder Drones, who is also voiced by their shared VA, Michael Kovach. Similarly, Niles' personality and tone very closely resemble that of Jax from The Amazing Digital Circus, who is also voiced by Kovach.
