Sprig Plantar is the deuteragonist of the Disney Channel animated series Amphibia. He is the best friend and guide of Anne Boonchuy, the older brother of Polly Plantar, and the grandson of Hop Pop.

Once a normal Frog boy living in the town of Wartwood in the fantastical-yet-dangerous world of Amphibia, Sprig's life would change forever when he meets a young girl named Anne Boonchuy, a human child from another world called Earth who ended up trapped hear by accident alongside her two friends via a mysterious music box, where they would soon evolve into inseparable best friends. Through various misadventures while showing his new best friend what his world's like, Sprig & his family would embark on a miraculous journey that would go from their world to Anne's all while doing his best to help Anne find her friends and find her a way back home.

Appearance[]

Sprig Plantar is a 10-year-old anthropomorphic frog of small height. He has hot pink skin with a light pink underbelly and has short orange blond hair underneath his hat. He has a large, elongated, chartreuse tongue that extends to certain lengths, four-fingered hands and two-toed webbed feet.

As his everyday clothing, he wears a dark forest green hat with olive green goggles and a jade green jacket paired with dark teal shorts.

In the Pilot episode titled Amphibialand, Sprig was initially called Weed. And instead of having a violin as a musical instrument, he had a flute instead. For his appearance, he originally had a blue tongue, wore a yellow neckerchief and a stitched green shirt. He also was slightly smaller, his pupils were bigger, and was colored red with a tan underbelly.

In "Dating Season", Sprig's head is colored light pink, and he has orange cheeks. He has a yellow beret-beanie-esque hat with blue feathers on his hat next to each other which makes it look like a geyser. Around his neck, he has a big white disc. He has a very short green shirt with big-circle shaped short sleeves. The big-circle shaped short sleeves are peach colored with orange seed shapes on it the short sleeves. He has big-circle shaped pants with thick vertical stripes with the pattern of colors green to yellow. It also looks like the outfit is too big for him.

In "The Shut-In!", Anne creates a human version of Sprig in her imagination named Twig. He is a human of average height with slightly tan skin and reddish-blonde hair. He wears a dark green beanie with pink and brown pins. He possesses a similar school sweater to Anne with a green undershirt and a dark green jacket over it as well as dark blue shorts, white socks and black sneakers. To complete it, he has a red backpack.

In the series finale's epilogue, Sprig is shown to be slightly older; he now has more hair, to the point in which they start showing underneath his hat, pushing them slightly to the side. His jacket has additionally gotten longer, with each side now having three buttons, he now wears longer shorts which are rolled up, and he now wears a red neckerchief around his neck.

Personality[]

He's a happy-go-lucky child who tried making friends by messing around, and according to his "Hop Pop", he has been known to be irresponsible, authorizing his little sister over him despite the fact he is her big brother. He was also playful with Anne when she asked him how she could trust him. He's also adventurous, as he was daring to go prove his worth by taking down Anne, as well as take down a sea monster with the peppers that made a person wish that he/she was dead.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Digging: He is a good hole digger.
  • Fiddle: He's very superior at playing the fiddle.
  • Slingshot: He uses his slingshot for playing and self-defense. He also demonstrates having a great aim with it.
  • Singing: He is a good singer and can sing while playing his fiddle.
  • Armpit Farts: He is shown to be surprisingly adept at making armpit farts that are in tune with classical music.
  • Bojutsu: In "Hopping Mall", he seems to be very skilled with the staff that he bought for Ivy.
  • Vocal Mimicry: As seen during "Quarreler's Pass", Sprig has a talent to perfectly imitate other voices. He shares this talent with Polly, which shows that it might possibly run in the family.
  • Sepak Takraw: Sprig turns out to be a natural at the Thai sport as shown during "Temple Frogs".
  • Tough Tongue: In "Spider-Sprig", Sprig's tongue is able to stop a moving bus.
  • Martial Art: After undergoing training by Grime, Sprig is able to use a fighting style that combines his speed and agility with momentum to cause devastating damage to his targets with great precision, as well as utilizing his mental rage to boost his strength in order to defeat Beatrix.

Behind the scenes[]

Early development[]

In his initial concept, Sprig would be named Weed, have a very different appearance, different clothing without the hat and goggles, smaller eyes and a blue tongue instead of yellow, as well as going through numerous color changes before settling on hot pink.

Name and basis[]

Sprig's name is a play on the word, Spring, a reference to his favorite season and the spring-like patterns of frogs hopping. Also, the word Sprig is a real word. It means a small spray of some plant with its leaves, flowers, etc. in Dictionary.com.

According to Disney, Sprig's pink exterior was based on the real-life Strawberry poison-dart frog, a species of small poison dart frog found in Central America.[3] However, these frogs are usually not pink, but red or orange.

Voice[]

Sprig is voiced by Justin Felbinger. The announcement came from The Hollywood Reporter on May 15, 2019.[4]

Debut[]

Sprig debuted in the series premiere, "Anne or Beast?", and in Teen Girl in a Frog World, he debuted in "No Signal".

  • Despite being the show’s deuteragonist, Sprig was the first main character to be introduced in the cartoon.
    • Sprig himself even acknowledged this in the Sasha Theme Song Takeover.
