Sunset Paradise is an Australian-American computer-animated web series created by Luke and Kevin Lerdwichagul, produced and animated by Glitch Productions and funded by Screen Australia for GLITCH. It was revealed in SMG4: War Of The Fat Italians 2020. The pilot was released on March 26, 2021 at 4 PM PT, and nine more episodes were released weekly starting on June 4, 2021, and concluding on July 30.

The series is a spinoff of the SMG4 series which focuses on Meggy Spletzer, who takes a vacation to find the calling she needs, and also fights a variety of criminals and her inner demon, Shadow Meggy. Two trailers were released, Sunset Paradise (Official Trailer) and My New Adventure. Unlike Meta Runner, which focuses on Tari as the protagonist but is set in a separate continuity, Sunset Paradise is set within the SMG4 continuity, but remains standalone in nature to put sole focus on Meggy's ongoing character arc.

Synopsis[]

Sometime after winning the final Splatfest and fulfilling her promise to Desti in Meggy's Destiny: An SMG4 Movie, Meggy has found it increasingly hard to figuring out what she wants to do with her life that gives a purpose. To help sort herself out with some much-needed relaxation, she takes a vacation to Port Aurora, the island paradise home of the Aura Boras, and host to all manner of colorful tourists, leaving her dear friends behind. Unfortunately for her, the town has become plagued with criminal activity in the lead-up to its Phoenix Festival which takes place once every 100 years, and the closest thing the island has to an authority figure is the inept deputy Auri Bori who Meggy meets and befriends. If she wants to get any peace and quiet, Meggy will need to team up with Auri and lay down the law and bring justice as Port Aurora's new sheriff, leading to one heck of a crazy misadventure. Along the way, she not only has to battle a diverse cast of criminals including the Spud Buds, a rowdy gang of potato thugs, Whisk, a sly, but shy cat burglar, the Funky Fource, a team of super villainous robotic dancers, and the infamous criminal mastermind leading them, Sir Benedict Cumbersnatch, but also dealing with her inner demon self, Shadow Meggy.

Trivia[]

  • Sunset Paradise seems to be based on Super Mario Sunshine, as they both have quite a few similarities:
    • Meggy takes a vacation to Port Aura, similar to how in Super Mario Sunshine, Mario, Princess Peach and Toadsworth take a trip to Isle Delfino.
    • Port Aura is similar to Isle Delfino, as they are both islands in the middle of the ocean with non-human inhabitants.
    • Aura Boras are similar to Piantas, as they are both friendly residents of their respective islands.
    • Meggy has a "dark" counterpart named Shadow Meggy, who is similar to Shadow Mario, Bowser Jr. alter-ego.
  • This was confirmed in a reddit AMA by Luke Lerdwichagul, where he stated that Sunset Paradise has taken inspiration from both Super Mario Sunshine and A Hat in Time.[1]
    • In comparison to A Hat in Time, Port Aurora bears a resemblance to the city of "Mafia Town". Whisk could be compared to the mustache girl. Benedict could be compared to the Mafia Boss because his Goonies are built like mafia subordinates.
    • In comparison to Super Mario Sunshine, Shadow Meggy is obviously inspired by Shadow Mario who, while not the same character, has a similar concept. Also, in Super Mario Sunshine, Mario goes on vacation to take a break but is interrupted because of the fact that he has to stop crime and clean the entirety of Isle Delfino, while with Meggy, she wanted to take a nice vacation, but crime got in the way.
  • Sunset Paradise does take place in the SMG4 universe unlike Meta Runner, making it canon.
    • Unlike other SMG4 spinoff series like Guards N' R****ds, Sunset Paradise is a fully-fledged animated series rather than a machinima, and the first to feature an entirely original cast (if Meggy's Splatoon origins aren't counted).
      • The show's style of humor seems to be largely based off of SMG4 (Meggy tries to attack a monkey with a durian, which turns out to be a no sell and causes the monkey to chase Meggy with a knife that seemingly appears out of thin air.)
  • The crab carrying Meggy's suitcase uses King Crab's model from Meta Runner.
  • Meggy Spletzer is the second SMG4 girl to have her own show, with the first female being Tari with her show Meta Runner.
    • While the Tari from Meta Runner is part of a separate universe and is that's not the same as her SMG4 counterpart, the Meggy that appears in this show is the same one that has appeared in SMG4's videos.
  • Ironically, Sunset Paradise has an anime-like art style for many of the characters when Meggy herself hates anime. She was totally unaware about it, however.
  • So far the episodes are named after old movies (excluding Episode 1, which is simply "PILOT", and Episode 10, named "Rebirth", although there is a 2016 film with that name).
  • Not counting the Lerdwichaguls, three of Meta Runner's voice actors play roles in Sunset Paradise, who are Anthony Sardinha, Jason Marnocha and David J.G. Doyle.
  • This series marks the third time that Meggy was abused by evil characters, in this case being brainwashed by the Funky Fource.
  • Despite there being a Sunset Paradise Intro Theme, every episode (except for the Pilot) plays a shortened version of the theme song.
  • Since Luke already answered the Q&A on Reddit that Meggy won't stay in Port Aura forever, this series was a little more transparent than Meta Runner.
  • The "Meggy T-Shirt" features Meggy holding an Inkzooka from Splatoon, making this the first "post-2019" merch (excluding Desti's appearance in the "SMG4 Girlz" T-Shirt) to feature content originating from a Nintendo game.
  • In STREAM CRASHED LOL - Streaming Until I Hit 5̶ ̶m̶i̶l̶l̶ 5,100,000 Subscribers [LIVE], Luke (SMG4) and Kevin said that the red Funky Fource Member was Phil and the blue Funky Fource Member was Felix.
  • In EP 2: The Silence of the Yams, Melony (in her melon form) and the Old Man both briefly appear in the scene where Meggy, Auri, and the Spud Buds fight in the dark. This was the first time a 3D model was used for the Old Man, which would go on to appear in the SMG4 series starting in SMG4: The Floor is Lava.
  • This is the only Glitch show to not feature Elsie Lovelock as a voice actor (not counting the bonus episode If Friday Night Funkin Was 3D, in which she voices Auri, filling in for his main actor).
